Carménère

Originally from Bordeaux, France, with Chile as its new home. Long confused with Merlot, it was rediscovered through DNA testing in 1994. Devastated by phylloxera in Bordeaux, it brilliantly revived in Chile.

History

Brought from Bordeaux to Chile in the 19th century, cultivated as Merlot. As phylloxera eliminated it in Bordeaux, Chile became the world's largest producer. Now recognized as Chile's signature variety.

Sommelier Note

Chilean Carménère features bell pepper and spice character with ripe dark fruit sweetness. More powerful than Merlot, softer than Cabernet. Fully ripe examples from good years are remarkably elegant.
