History

The name comes from the Spanish word for 'early ripening.' In Rioja, barrel aging techniques were learned from Bordeaux winemakers in the 19th century, establishing today's style. It goes by different names across Spain.

Sommelier Note

Tempranillo shows completely different faces at each aging level. Crianza is fruity and fresh, Gran Reserva is complex and profound. The vanilla from American oak divides opinions, but food pairings are excellent. With Ibérico ham, it's an unbeatable match.
